SafeD Athens Inc. is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to enhancing safety and security in Athens and the University of Georgia community. We work with and advocate before law enforcement, city officials, state agencies, the University of Georgia, and community organizations to research and advance effective safety programs and solutions.
Together, our affiliated working groups include more than 7,000 parents, students, alumni, and community members who share an interest in improving safety and security in the UGA and Athens communities. We focus on proactive, research-based solutions designed to identify and address safety concerns before tragedy occurs.
SafeD Athens operates independently of the University of Georgia and Athens-Clarke County.
About Our Organization
SafeD Athens is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit organization, EIN 88-1496427. No officers, founders, or volunteers receive compensation. We have no paid staff.
Our organization operates on a very small annual budget funded through limited donations and fundraising. These funds support basic operating expenses, advocacy, research, and community safety programming. SafeD Athens files all required annual state and federal nonprofit filings.
SafeD Athens does not receive compensation from companies or vendors whose programs, services, or technologies we research, discuss, or recommend.
Our Mission
Our mission is to enhance safety and security infrastructure throughout the UGA and Athens communities through education, research, advocacy, collaboration, and direct action.
We research safety programs, policies, technologies, and best practices and bring ideas forward for consideration by UGA, Athens-Clarke County, law enforcement, and other community stakeholders. We believe proactive planning, thoughtful investment, collaboration, and accountability can reduce risk and help prevent future tragedies.
Our vision is a safer, cleaner, and more walkable Athens supported by a strong relationship between the University and the surrounding community. Safety is a shared community responsibility, and our work is intended to benefit students, residents, businesses, visitors, and the broader Athens community.
Our mission is driven by compassion and the belief that everyone deserves to live, work, learn, and visit in a safe and secure community. We believe effective public safety should consider the needs of the entire community, especially those who may be most vulnerable.

Through education, advocacy, research, and community engagement, we work to identify gaps, encourage practical solutions, promote accountability, and help prevent future tragedies.
