Gang Activity Continues…

Gang activity in Athens-Clarke County continues to be a high safety/security risk for UGA students and the broader community. The map below shows shootings which have occurred within the county for calendar years 2021 and 2022. The red highlighted targets are located within the University of Georgia 500 yard jurisdiction. The blue targets are outside the 500 yard jurisdiction (red outline). There have been 43 shootings in this 2 year period within 500 yards of the main campus of the University of Georgia; 228 reported shootings outside the 500 yards for a total of 271 total reported shootings. Monitoring of reported shootings for the last 2 years, inside/outside the 500 yard jurisdiction, can be viewed here.

Gang activity accounts for roughly 50% of reported shooting sites. Since 1/1/2023 there have been 13 additional reported shootings. If January is the average, the estimate for 2023 would be 156 shootings.

The average number of reported shootings in 2021 was 11 per month and in 2022 it was 13 per month. In January of 2023 there were 13 reported shootings compared to January 2022 with 18 and January 2021 with 7. Also note that these are reported shooting incidents where multiple cartridges are collect from many crime scenes.
